Sunday Post-workout Plans

For those of you interested we are going to hit up the Marina Grill tomorrow after the workout for some brunch.

Following that we are all invited to Richard Lee's to watch the tape delayed coverage of the NYC marathon (he is going to PVR it).

Some of you are probably going to try to watch as much as you can before leaving for the workout and/or receive updates during & after the workout (via iPhone or whatever). But, some of us don't want to know anything until we watch at Richard's. So, if you can please be kind enough to not talk about the results (or anything you know about the race) at the workout or brunch that would be great.

See you all tomorrow

  1. So, reaction to NYC marathon, what did ya'll think of the race? Gutted that Bairu dropped out, was really hoping for something big from him.

How 'bout Haile G? DNF, then apparently announces his retirement at the post-race presser. I'll believe that when I see it.

Ritz? 8th place, 2:12 and change, but I guarantee he ain't happy with that. Should he be?

Women's race? At least Flanagan placed well, though the time isn't anything to write home about (although I haven't checked out her splits, I imagine it was faster over the second half).

Hope the tempo went well today, keep me in the loop re: off-day runs during the week. Talk to ya later,
    DGant

  2. NYC was a complete shit show, as it is every year. Its amazing how many good guys can run bad in that race. Don't really know why - no pace makers, hills, late in the season (often 3rd marathon of the year). tough one for Bairu. He'll get it right on an easier course with consistent pacing. Ritz's form looked good. ha. Flanagan was impressive. The marathon is a beast, it even humbled the emperor this time! I'm getting scared for Dec 5th!

  3. Yeah, seems like one's finishing time is almost irrelevant at NYC. More about being able to compete and handle dramatic increases in pace and the hills.
Hope Bairu isn't hurt... Wykes, you still think he'll pass on Canadian XC Nats if he's healthy?

  4. Bairu quote from Canadian Running Website:

EXCLUSIVE: Bairu’s New York nightmare: ‘I basically got blurred vision and went down’
    November 8, 2010
By Michal Kapral and Mihira Lakshman
The good news: Regina’s Simon Bairu is not injured after dropping out of the New York City Marathon around the 36K mark. The frightening news is that the Canadian 10,000m record-holder, who was making his marathon debut, didn’t just drop out - he passed out. The 27-year-old was with the leaders until the 25K mark, but went off the radar of the race trackers by 36K after running a few very slow kilometres.

“I basically got blurred vision and went down,” Bairu told Canadian Running in an interview after the race. “The next thing I knew I was in an ambulance. I went down, and someone in the stands put a blanket over me. My coach didn’t even know. I went to the hospital for a couple of hours.”

Bairu blames his downfall on not taking in enough fluids during the race, combined with the surge-and-dawdle pace that he says sometimes alternated between 4:30 and 5:30 miles. “By mile 21, it all caught up to me … It was pretty simple. It was just energy depletion.”

  5. Gant, I don't think he'll show in Guelph. 1) He's afraid of you, 2) if you stalked him on twitter (like me!) you'd know he is going on a vacation to Hawaii now. So, don't think that means that he's going to turn around and hit up Guelph. But, stranger things have happened. Hope the workout went well today. What's your Thursday look like for running?

  6. "While he observed some of his competitors eating a packet of energy-laden gel every two miles, he said he took one packet all day."

With all the Nike stuff thrown into that program, you'd think they'd go into proper nutrition.
